Conservation Farming School

A Guide to Implementing Best Management Practices and

Keys to Obtaining Government Cost-Share Funding

Hosted by the Greenbrier Valley Conservation District, this five night series of classes will cover topics of Forage Management and Grazing Systems, Soils and Nutrient Management, Livestock Water and Irrigation Systems, Diversifying with Vegetable and Row Crops, and Best Management Practices for Conservation Planning. Classes will be held on the evenings of May 9,16,23,30, and June 6, 2017 from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm at a location to be determined in the Lewisburg area. Participants will receive a binder of information, soil probe, and pasture stick. The registration fee is $50 to cover administration cost and fees. Agriculture and science teachers may participate at no cost.

2017 Conservation Photo Contest - 3/3/17

Greenbrier Valley Conservation District announces the return of their Conservation Photo Contest for amateur photographers in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas Counties.  The contest is part of the WV Association of Conservation Districts’ Conservation Photo Contest and the National Association of Conservation Districts’ Conservation Photo Contest.  Prizes will be awarded in an Adult category and a Youth category.  Winning entries will be submitted to the WVACD state level competition.  Entries must be received by June 1, 2017.

GVCD Rental Equipment Demonstration - 3/3/17

GVCD RENTAL EQUIPMENT DEMONSTRATION

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District will be hosting an interactive equipment field day on March 15, 2017 to demonstrate the specialized conservation related farm equipment they offer for rent.  The purpose of this event is to give farmers interested in using this equipment a chance to learn how to use, calibrate, and care for this equipment while it is in their possession.  Topics and speakers will include:  BBI Spreaders (lime/fertilizer, and poultry litter) – BBI Representative; Tye and Great Plains No-Till Seed Drills – TBD; Portable Livestock Scales – Don Dransfield, WVU Extension Service; Post Drivers- Brian Wickline, WVU Extension Service; Chemical Sprayers – Dennis Burns, WV Conservation Agency; Potato Planting & Harvesting Equipment – Rodney Walbrown, WVU Extension Service Retired.  Additionally, tips on using the sprayers for controlling wood invasive species will be discussed, as well as, planting recommendations including chemical herbicides and fertilizer use with the potato planting equipment.  Instruction will begin at 10am for each piece of equipment.  Lunch will be served from 12-1pm.  Live demonstrations of the equipment will be from 1-2pm.  There is no charge to attend; however, to ensure a seat and a lunch, it is requested that attendees RSVP by 10am on March 13, 2017 by calling the GVCD office at 304-645-6173 or emailing lhutchison@wvca.us.  The event will take place at the GVCD Equipment Lot at 178 Clearview Drive, Lewisburg.  It will be under-roof but outside, so dress accordingly.  Pesticide Recertification Credits are available.

JUST FOR KIDS! 

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District (GVCD) is participating in the Poster Contest sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) and the West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts (WVACD.)  The contest is open to all school aged children in the district and prizes will be awarded in each of the following age groups:  Grades K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.  District winners are eligible to compete in the state contest and state winners will move on to the national contest.

The theme for 2017 is "Healthy Soils are Full of Life." 

  • Judging will be based on conservation message, visual effectiveness, originality, and universal appeal. 
  • Deadline for entry in the GVCD contest is April 7, 2017
  • Poster size for Grades K-6 is a half sheet or 14" x 22".
  • Poster size for Grades 7-12 is a full sheet or 22" x 28".
  • The 2017 Stewardship title, "Healthy Soils are Full of Life," must be on the front of the poster.  No other titles should be used.
  • Any media may be used to create a flat or two dimensional effect (paint, crayon, colored pencil, charcoal, paper, or other materials.)  The back of each poster MUST have the student's name, grade level, teacher's name, and school.

Century Farm Program 2017 - 1/30/17

Greenbrier Valley Conservation District Announces Century Farm Program

 

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District is pleased to announce that the West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts is continuing the West Virginia Century Farm Program.

The GVCD is seeking to recognize families who have been farming the same tract of land for at least 100 years.  The farm must have been in continuous operation by the same family and a family member must live on the farm or be an integral part of the day-to-day operation of the farm enterprise.  Line of ownership from the first family member owning the land may be through wives, husbands, children, brothers, nephews, or nieces.  The farm must also consist of at least 10 acres of the original holdings and gross more than $1,000 annually from farm products.

For recognition, applications must be received by the GVCD no later than April 1, 2017.  Signs will be awarded to the Century Farm families selected by the GVCD.  For an application form, please contact the Greenbrier Valley Conservation District at 304-645-6173 or the USDA Farm Service Agency at 304-645-6172.  Both are located at 179 Northridge Drive, Lewisburg, WV  24901.

Farm Field Day and Workshop - 6/10/16

Farm Field Day and Workshop

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District and the West Virginia Conservation Agency will be hosting a farm field day and workshop on June 30, 2016, beginning at 5pm, at the Bill Canterbury Farm in Sinks Grove.

Mr. Canterbury has recently installed an intensive rotational grazing and livestock watering system with assistance from the WVCA Agricultural Enhancement and Clean Water Act 319 Programs.  During the workshop, we will tour this system and explain how it works not only to protect water and soil quality, but also to increase the overall production of the farm.  Dr. Ed Rayburn and Dr. Darin Matlick of the WVU Extension Service will be there to explain the forage system and to discuss the new Veterinary Feed Directive.

The farm is located in Monroe County on Rt 3, 3.4 miles west of Pickaway.

This event is free to the public and dinner will be provided; however, we do ask that you RSVP to the Greenbrier Valley Conservation District at 304-645-6173, if you plan to attend.

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District is pleased to announce the Spring Outreach Program for the Peterstown area of Monroe County.  This program is designed to address funding availability and concerns and share ideas of beginner, novice, hobby and professional farmers alike.  The meeting is being held at the Ballard Fire House in Ballard, WV .  There is no charge to attend and refreshments will be served.  Contact Barry Level, Grassland Technician, for more info.  304-645-6172 Extension 110 or 304-520-2318.

Basics of Farming Operations Conference - 3/16/16

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District (GVCD) is pleased to announce the initial gathering of the Basics of Farming Operations Conference for Greenbrier and Monroe Counties.   This program is designed to address concerns and share ideas of beginner, novice, hobby, and professional farmers alike.  Session 1 will take place Tuesday, March 22, 2016, from 6 - 8pm, at the Organ Cave Community Center, which is located at the intersection of US 63 and US 219.  There is no charge for attendance and refreshments will be served.  There will be future sessions throughout the district.  Please click below to view more information.
